We recently had pleasure of meeting - freelance wine journalist Dan Traucki at our Old Bus Depot wine stall. He has the following to say about our 2010 Shiraz and 2013 Sparkling Riesling.
THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEWS: The day after the stunning Canberra International Riesling Challenge (CIRC), I was browsing through the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston, ACT and came across a tasting booth for WALLAROO WINES. Not having heard of them before, I tried the range and the following wines were outstanding:
WALLAROO 2013 SPARKLING RIESLING (it won a Silver medal in the 2014 CIRC) had a gorgeous, lively bead exuding alluring, lime and grapefruit aromas. On the palate there were masses of citrus characters that lead to a crisp, lingering finish that was not overly acidic as can often be the case with Riesling. A superb bubbly for celebrations.
Whilst the current release, 2013 WALLAROO CANBERRA SHIRAZ, was a good drop which will flesh out over the next few years, the 2010 was jaw dropping at 5-years old. Still available from the winery for a mere $21 a bottle, this was a breathtaking, medium-bodied, cool-climate Shiraz. Redolent with rich ripe plum and dark berry flavours with a hint of white pepper and oak tannins. This complex wine enthrals the palate with its mouth-filling elegance and leaves one wanting more, much more! A really sensational, lip-smacking wine!
Wallaroo are a very small Canberra region winery that are making some really great wines that are worth seeking out. I suggest that you check them out on www.wallaroowines.com.au – you won’t be disappointed!
