THE WALLAROO STORY
THE CANBERRA REGION
LOCATION MAP

The Canberra region

The Canberra WIne District traces its origins to the 1850's wineries at Yass. Today, there are 33 wineries and 140 vineyards in the District, consisting of 500 hectares of vines.

Grape growing and wine making in the Canberra District has undergone several growth periods during the past century the local wine industry, with its boutique style of wines growing in popularity each year.

The region's general mild, dry autumns, with cool nights and clear days, are ideal for allowing the grapes to ripen fully. Some vineyards are located as high as 900 metres, requiring special expertise. The soils vary from shale, clay loam to free draining sandy, granite based soils.

The success of the District's wines at regional, State and national shows is proof of their quality.
